Good morning from camp!
I apologize for not posting yesterday morning. We had an amazing trip to Calaway Park on Friday. Campers were so good at compromising with each other. In their groups of 3 with a counsellor, campers collectively decided which rides they wanted to go on, and which rides they preferred to sit out on. Even in the heat, campers were so patient with each other! I was super impressed.
Yesterday, we begun our day with a game of mantracker. Due to the crummy weather and the air quality advisory warning, we played this game inside, which was still such a good time. Campers had to hide with their counsellor group, and wait until the 'mantrackers' were released. If the mantrackers found them, they would start to hunt for the other teams as well. Along with many of the games we play at camp, even if they are "out", there is still an opportunity for campers to continue to play (in a different role).
Yesterday's social skill was 'friendship and compliments.' Campers learned about the qualities that make up a good friend and a bad friend. In order to work on this skill, campers played a variety of games. For example, one of the head counsellor teams had campers run around and try to tag the counsellors. If the counsellor was tagged then they would give them a statement which either represented characteristics of a 'good friend' or a 'bad friend.' For example, some of the statements included "makes you join a game that you do not want to play", "you can trust this person", "lies to you" etc. As a group, they had to decide which column the statement fell under, and had to glue it to their bristol board. At the end of the game, the pages were full, and they shared them with the entire group and other teams in the game. Campers also talked about compliments and how compliments can be given to each other. We discussed the difference between a $5 compliment, a $50 compliment and an $100 compliment. When your camper returns home tonight, make sure that you ask them to give you a $5, $50, and $100 compliment. Ensure that you ask them what the difference is between the 3. Putting an amount on a compliment is a great way for kids to see the difference between compliments and how a compliment might change depending on a relationship.
After social skills, we moved into clubs. Campers either went to the arts and crafts club, the music club or the sports club. At the arts and crafts club, campers made Minecraft characters out of paper, our music club practiced their song for the End of Camp Ceremony, and the sports club played floor hockey. Can I just say that our campers this week are so creative! I think we have a few future artists in the crowd...
Yesterday, we had a choice afternoon! Campers got to choose between play dough making, field games or the paper airplane challenge. Who knew that a paper airplane could go so far?! Most campers brought home their play dough yesterday, so make sure you check their bags for it!
Well, today has already been a great day at camp. Today's social skill is 'having a conversation' (part 2). As our day camp sessions are 2 weeks in length, we are able to build on some of the skills that we learned last week. I will make sure that I update you on the activities that your camper will have completed today. After lunch, we are heading to Southland Leisure Centre for an afternoon of swimming. I (hopefully) guarantee that your camper will be exhausted by the end of the day!
Until tomorrow,
Tigger (Hayley Graham)
