Day Camp 1 - Friday

Ahoy!

It was Pirate Day at camp and we had an excellent day of activities. After our Zones of Regulation check-in, we did a treasure hunt for our camp-wide game. Campers traveled to four different activities, using their maps as a guide, and completed pirate-themed quests and challenges so as to attain gems. Once they had all four gems, they could present them to their head counsellor where the “X” marked the spot and receive their treasure. Every camper got a tiny message in a bottle that they could tie to their braid. We then had a snack before transitioning to our Social Skill.

Even our Social Skills were nautical today. Campers assessed problems and identified the size of various problems through a series of activities, with one group even using a big pool of water. Some campers wore the eye patches that they got from camp-wide game so they could feel like pirates. Afterwards, we did Clubs, had a bit of free time, and then had lunch.

Since it was the last day of this session, we had Kangaroo Kourt today. For the last two weeks, campers have been submitting accusations against counsellors. These accusations have included “being too nice” or “doing a dab” or even “being too full of beans”. It was determined that Beans was the most guilty of crimes against camp and, despite one camper defending her passionately, Beans ended up being slimed with sparkly blue water.

We then played a game in which campers had to react to commands given by their captain (today that was Chinook) that were all pirate themed as well. One of the eight commands were, “run to the right, hit the deck!” and campers had to lay flat on the ground to the right of Chinook. Another was “forward, octopus!” and campers had to lay on their backs in front of Chinook with their arms and legs wiggling in the air like an octopus. Eventually, one camper stood above the rest as the winner and first mate. Once that was done, we played Where’s Fred before getting ready for family and friends to arrive.

For today’s Awards Ceremony and Slideshow we were joined by camper families and the POLARIS program. Quack did a presentation in which she spoke about camp, the POLARIS program, Fall programming, and more. We also watched the slideshow (made by yours truly) and did Steps in the Right Direction before heading out to dodgeball or the picnic benches. We even had a fire pit to make s’mores and a sprinkler to run through to keep cool. It was truly a wonderful day!

Thanks for two great weeks,
Pippin
