Today, many of our campers began their day with a paintbrush
in hand soon after check-in!
We set out to create three banners for our camp room - two with
cool colours like green, purple and blue – to indicate the lower-energy side of
our camp room, equipped with bean bag chairs, where our campers can feel free to
relax. Another banner covered in warm tones – orange, gold, yellow, red and
magenta, was also made for the Art Zone – where campers can hang any and all of
the art that they make.
We began our day in our 2:6 groups, doing a Zones of Regulation
check-in first thing. Using this method of self-monitoring first thing in the
morning gives our campers and counsellors a starting point, from which they can
go forward. Having campers and staff recognize strategies that they can use to
help themselves throughout the day is a part of our Zones check in as well.
Following this, our campers spent an hour in Social Skill
before making all the preparations to leave for the zoo. We got sunscreened up,
filled our water bottles, and got ready to board the bus!
Much of our time today was spent at the Calgary Zoo, with
the bus picking us up at 11 and dropping us off at 3.
At the zoo, we split into our 2:6 groups, with some groups
being accompanied by a head counsellor, and some splitting further to spend the
afternoon 1:2. Many groups made a list of their most-wanted animals. Though
groups would cross paths from time to time, and our entire crew ate lunch and
travelled together, no two groups had the same zoo experience!
After returning to Foothills Academy, we finished our day
with a Zones of Regulation check-in and Steps in the Right Direction.
