Day Camp 2: Day 1

Good morning from camp,

Welcome to the blog! My name is Tigger, and I am the camp coordinator this summer. This is something that I will hopefully try to use and post everyday, however, sometimes camp gets way too busy. But, I will definitely try... I promise.

I can already tell, even from 2 days, that these next 2 weeks are going to be full of fun, creative games, and wonderful friendships.

Yesterday when we arrived at camp, we played one of our favourite camp games... dodgeball! This was a great intro game because it gave campers the chance to work together as a team to try and defeat the opponent. It was great to see campers talking to new friends, and collaboratively coming up with different ways to 'dodge' the opposing team. After Camp Wide Game, we moved into our social skill of the day which was the group contract. At the beginning of each camp session, we always complete a group contract which is an opportunity for campers to talk about what they would like to see from their friends while at camp, as well as other behaviours they do not want to see at camp. We also talked about our 3 camp rules which are; to respect yourself, to respect others, and to respect the property/environment. All of our campers contributed to this discussion, and signed the contract to ensure that they will follow and respect these rules while at camp.

After group contract, we made camp braids! Every camper that attends Camp Amicus gets to make a braid. These are a way for campers to showcase all of their accomplishments while at camp with us. If you would like to learn more about braids, there is another blog post below which discusses camp braids more in detail. When your camper comes home next Friday, make sure you ask them to show you their braid...you will be impressed. Also, make sure you ask them what the paw prints on their button represent!

Yesterday afternoon we went to Flying Squirrel! This is always one of my favourite field trips. Even though it was the first day of camp, we saw campers talking to new people, and jumping around with them! Campers got to show off their awesome tricks into the foam pit, sweet dodgeball throws on the dodgeball court, and phenomenal strength on the ninja course! As per usual, our campers were extremely tired on the way home...I even saw a few of them sleeping.

Today is also a really busy day at camp! This morning we will be doing some fun team building activities in our head counsellor teams. I can't wait to tell you all about them tomorrow. Our counsellors sure are creative when it comes to programming activities, especially teamwork challenges. After social skills, we will be having a choice program afternoon. Campers get the choice of playing water games, baking cookies, or button making. When your camper returns home tonight, you can ask them what 2 programs they attended this afternoon.

I will post tomorrow to update you on our day today. I am back to all the fun!

Until next time,
Tigger (Hayley Graham)
