Yesterday we had a great day at camp. We begun our day with a classic Camp Wide Game, Temple of Doom. In this game, campers have to get all of the bean bags to one side without being caught by the opponents. In order to prevent the bean bags from reaching the other side, opponents must hit the other team with dodgeballs. For our campers who love dodgeball, this is always a camp favourite!
After Temple of Doom, we moved into our social skills for the day which was digital communication and bullying. This is one of my personal favourites, simply because it is so relatable to campers between the ages of 10-15. Everyone always has something to contribute. Both of our head counsellor teams did an Emoji activity where campers had to identify the Emoji that correlated with a certain emotion. What campers soon found out was that certain people identified Emojis differently. We talked about how certain Emojis can be misinterpreted by different people. We also spoke about how context plays into it, and depending on the conversation being had, Emojis may represent different things. When your camper returns home tonight, ask them about the Emoji that they had to identify, and what it meant to them. Ask them to use the Emoji in a conversation. Campers also spoke about bullying, and how to identify a bully. In a safe environment, campers shared stories and strategies they used to stand up to bullies they may have encountered in their life.
After social skills, we had clubs! This week, campers get to choose between attending the arts and crafts club, the fine arts club or the sports club. At the arts and crafts club, campers made creative art with clay, at the sports club, campers played basketball and soccer, and the fine arts club practiced their final performance piece. When your camper gets home, make sure you ask them what club they attended both today and yesterday. In the afternoon yesterday, we headed off to Southland Leisure Centre for swimming! Campers got to go on the slides, play on the play structure, swim in the wave pool or relax in the hot tub. It was a fantastic afternoon, full of lots of laughs.
Today has also been a busy day at camp. This morning we played a game of Mantracker in the school where campers either have to hide or track down the other campers. Our social skill today was Positive Relationships where we talked about appropriate relationships and how to identify a positive from a negative relationship (both emotional relationships, and friendships). I will update you tomorrow on the activities that your camper partook in.
We are about to head into a Choice Program afternoon. It is a beautiful day, so we are planning to spend as much time outside as we can! Campers will be getting the choice of playing sports games outside, having fun at water games or making shrink art for their camp braid. Make sure when your camper gets home tonight to ask them which 2 programs they attended.
Make sure you check back in tomorrow.
I am back to all of the fun,
