Day Camp 1 - Monday

July 8

Yeehaw!

Today was Western Day at Camp Amicus, and we made sure everyone knew it! Many of our campers and staff donned cowboy boots, hats, and plaid shirts. For those without, we had miniature hats that proved to be a hit throughout the day.

Our Zones of Regulation check-in began our day as usual, although with a “howdy, partner” or two more than usual.

Today, our social skill was Body Language. Activities in social skill had our campers focus on observing and interpreting the body language and facial expressions of their friends, as well as take note of how their own body language presents to others. This is a very useful social skill in everyday life, and our counsellors made it fun and engaging.

Clubs came next. In Art Club, some campers made clay models, while others coloured. Some of our wonderful friends were nice enough to make us tiny clay hats to sit atop our miniature cowboy hats. It was quite the look, if I do say so myself.

Cooking club made bacon, eggs and pancakes, a true stampede breakfast! Sports club played an assortment of western-themed games. I watched a two-camper relay race with one camper pulling and the other seated on a scooter, somewhat alike a chuck wagon race. It was great fun to behold.

I hear that music club has finished their original song, and that we’ll get to hear it on the last day of camp!

For Choice today, campers got to pick from musical instrument making, camp classic Zombie Apocalypse, a hybrid of tag and dodgeball that has a small team ‘infect’ every other player until just one remains. Congratulations to the winners!

Still, campers had more options. Some played a game of tag, while also keeping cow-print balloons from hitting the gym floor. This game’s constantly shrinking boundaries and fast pace meant campers were kept on their toes! Other campers chose to make custom horse crafts and then race them through an obstacle course. A Western theme was injected into nearly every activity today!

We ended our day with Steps in the Right Direction and a Zones of Regulation check.

We are headed to Southland Leisure Centre tomorrow!
