July 9
It’s a wonderful day to be at camp!
Today, as always, began in in our 2:6 groups for a Zones of
Regulation check-in. After settling in, we moved quickly to camp-wide game.
The game of choice today was capture the flag! Two teams of
campers and counsellors had to collaborate to hide one single flag, because
once the other team had it, it was game over! Needless to say, our day was very
exciting very early!
Our friends looking to play alternative games had a space as
well! Our alternative games allow our campers to partake in low-energy
activities as well, such as checkers, twister, or colouring. Alternative games
help camp-wide game run smoothly.
After we concluded with camp-wide game, we had a short
transition period before moving into social skill.
Today’s social skill was reading and responding to others’
emotions. This is a very important skill for anyone to have, and one that we
use on a daily basis. Being able to interpret others’ emotions, understanding
what makes another person feel a certain way, and knowing how best to respond
is very helpful! Not only that, today’s skill goes well in conjunction with
yesterday’s social skill, body language.
Once we had finished social skill, we had a half an hour of
free time before lunch. Many of our campers got into their bathing suits during
free time, to maximize their time at the pool! When everyone was done lunch, we
boarded the bus to Southland Leisure Centre.
At Southland, we maintained a 1:3 or higher ratio of
counsellors to campers. Campers were assigned to counsellors in accordance to
swimming confidence, meaning that many of our campers got to spend a lot of
time with friends outside their 2:6. We made full use of Southland’s
facilities: swimming in the wave pool, relaxing in the hot tub, diving into the
deep end, and using both water slides!
Back at Foothills Academy to end our day, we concluded with
a Zones of Regulation Check-in and Steps in the Right Direction.
