Horseback riding, swimming in the lake, hiking around the area and slime making! Campers travelled in groups of 7-8 to allow for the bonding that can happen when the group isn't so large. At the lake the sun shone high in the sky with loons calling in the distance. Some campers even made their own fishing rods out of sticks and string and practiced the patience that comes with waiting for a bite. Turns out fish aren't so attracted to paper clips as bait!
After swimming, hot showers prepared us for a class on how to make slime using corn starch, water and glitter. The slime was later used during Camp Amicus's first ever Kangaroo Court! A time when campers can charge counsellors of ridiculous "crimes" like sneaking out in the middle of the night to eat candy. Grey and Koala were charged by the campers and slimed as punishment! As I am writing this campers are working through problem solving challenges and practicing ways to de-escalate conflict. Tonight we are gathering at the outdoor amphitheatre for our end of camp ceremony.
Yesterday's team high ropes course was an incredible experience. Every camper tried the giant swing and the team ropes and many surprised themselves with how much they accomplished. I am so proud of how well each camper supported their team partner using encouraging words, creative problem solving skills and positive talk. Yesterday we celebrated their success by dancing proudly in our camp dance. Costumes, balloons and cinnamon buns had campers laughing and smiling the whole night. We wrapped the evening up with soft songs on the Ukulele sung by our lovely counsellor Scuttle.
Looking forward to the campfire, I get to give out Polar Bear Dip awards to all the campers who joined me for a jump in the lake each morning.
All the best from camp,
Kathleen "Quack Quack" Gurski
