Day Camp 1: Day 1 and 2

Good morning from day camp!

We apologize for not writing on the blog sooner, but we have had quite a few busy days at camp!

You may know me as Tigger (or Hayley) and I am the Camp Coordinator at Camp Amicus this summer. For the next few weeks, you will be hearing from me about all the exciting and fun adventures that are taking place.

On Monday, we got to camp and played our first game of day camp...capture the flag. Our daily Camp Wide Games are some of the best times had at camp. Camp Wide Games are a great way for campers to meet new friends, as it is an environment which fosters the importance of group collaboration and teamwork skills. It is also a time for campers to practice new skills. We saw this in our Camp Wide Game yesterday, bucket ball. This game required campers to communicate to one another, using both verbal and non-verbal skills. Needless to say, these games are a lot of movement, laughing and fun, while at the same time, developing new skill-sets!

After Camp Wide Games, we always move into our social skills for the day. On Monday, each camper had the opportunity to add something to our camp group contract. This group contract is a way for campers to express what behaviours they want to see/ do not want to see at camp. We also talked about the 3 rules of Camp Amicus; respecting yourself, others and the property. On Tuesday, our counsellors ran some fantastic team building activities. Some campers got to play on the portable low ropes course, got to duct tape a camper to the wall, or play human hungry hippos! In all of these activities, campers had to work together as a group in order to be successful. I have to say... our counsellors are extremely creative! A lot of the time, campers do not know they are working on these skills because it is so much fun!

On Monday, we went to our community garden for the afternoon. Campers got the chance to check out all the cool plants that the garden has to offer! The garden beds that belong to Camp Amicus have radishes, beans, potatoes, carrots, tomatoes, squash and so much more. Campers were even able to try a few things...mmm! While at the park, we also had colouring, playing in the sandbox, beach volleyball, kickball, music, and free time in the garden. It was quite the garden party if you ask me!

For our choice activity time yesterday afternoon, campers got to choose 2 programs that they wanted to attend. They got to choose between coding with Belle, real life Angry Birds with Kodiak or dodgeball with Zoom. Such cool programs, right?! Even I had so much fun learning all about coding. I must say, the campers are significantly better than me at coding...

Well... I am off to another great day at camp. Today, we will be heading to Southland Leisure Centre for an awesome afternoon of swimming! I can't wait.

Until tomorrow,

Tigger (Hayley Graham)
