Overnight Camp 1: Day 5
Hey Overnight Camp 1 Families!
Sorry for this late post! But we have more to share about our camp adventure.
Our last day of camp began with our final Polar Bear Dip! So many campers were working towards their Polar Bear Dip award. Some of our campers went for their first time, on our last day. The funniest conversations I have about our Polar Bear Dip Award is usually with our campers parents.
They ask me how we convince our campers to get up at 7AM to jump into a lake. It's a great question, however, we don't usually do any convincing. Our camper are motivated to get their Polar Bear Dip Award. It's pretty fantastic.
Our morning was spent learning about how to blow off steam, and trying out different tools that work for us.
In the afternoon, our campers got to spend some more time with the Goldeye Staff, and went to our teams ropes course, as well as the team swing.
These two activities reinforce some really key skills we work on while at camp. Our teams ropes course, has campers helping to support each other, communicate clearly and work on a plan together to reach a goal.
Our team swing has campers work through self advocacy, and letting their peers know what they feel comfortable with, and having control over their choices in the situation.
The teams ropes course and team swing, give great experiential opportunities to practice the skills we work on in our social skills programs.
The choice activities were varied, and had everything from waterfront time, to button making and water balloon battle ship.
Of course, it was time for Kangaroo Court before we knew it! This is a time where campers get to accuse counsellors of "Crimes Against Camp", these tend to get pretty creative, and can be anything from counsellors quacking all night (I was accused of this one) or because because - which was the crime our dear counsellor Data was accused of.
Unfortunately, Data was found guilty, and was slimed in front of all of our campers!
Our evening was capped off with our awards ceremony, and closing campfire. It has been a great week at camp! Thank for sharing it with all of us.
All the best from camp,
Kathleen Gurski/Quack Quack
