Day Camp 1 - Monday

Hello from day camp!

It’s a beautiful and hot day and we’re very excited to start off our first week of day camp. After campers arrived we separated into our counsellor groups and talked about Zones of Regulation. This technique provides a simple method of identifying one’s emotions easily and quickly using a spectrum of four colours. Each of the four colours represents a different field of emotions and moods and campers can say they are “green” or “blue with a bit of yellow” depending on how they’re feeling at the time.

After everyone understood the Zones, we headed to the field together to play camp wide game. This game involved campers smuggling gold papers in the clothes and trying to get across the field without the police finding the gold. Once they moved all the gold across the field, they won.  It was a great team effort! Afterward, campers made daily goals for themselves in the shade while they cooled off, and counsellors went over the schedule for the day. For today’s Zones of Regulation activity, campers split into their two head counsellor groups. One group made buttons that had the four Zones of Regulation colours with an emotive face to identify what each one meant, while the other played an adapted game of Twister based on emotions.

Since it’s the first day, campers made their Amicus braids. Campers are able to create and accept swag to put onto their colourful braids, with the first being a big Amicus button with their name on it. After that was done, we had a bit of free time before having lunch.

Once lunch was over, we had our Choice programming. Today, campers chose two of the three activities: giant battleship, cork animals and button making, and 3D printing. Throughout the afternoon campers had a great time making cork horses, giraffes, ducks, and dogs, as well as beautiful buttons and 3D printer designs. Giant battleship involved throwing wet sponges to try and hit paper ships and was a great way to stay cool.

At the end of the day, we did Steps in the Right Direction. This involves stickers that campers can give to their friends and counsellors based on something they did that day. Several campers give stickers out to their new friends for being so nice, or to counsellors and campers for helping them with activities. Once all the stickers had been handed out, we did another end-of-day Zones check in before campers headed home.

We’re very excited about tomorrow! We’ll be heading to the Flying Squirrel fun park in the afternoon, as well as having a camp wide game and introducing campers to clubs.

Read all about it tomorrow!
