Overnight Camp 1 - Thursday

Good morning!

The weather out at camp is absolutely beautiful today and the campers and counsellors can’t wait to get outside and enjoy the day. As per our usual routine, we started off with Polar Bear Dip, breakfast and Zones check in. For camp wide game we played tag with little paint balls and several campers had fun designs and splatters on their shirts from being tagged. Afterwards, the Social Skill of the day was Entering and Exiting Groups. Campers also made their daily goals around this time before having a bit of free time before lunch.

The afternoon began with another set of activities with our excellent Goldeye crew. Campers were back to the team challenge ropes course (on a different challenge today) and the giant swing. Two campers were able to climb to the top of Jacob’s Ladder, a course that involves climbing planks of wood that get consecutively further apart as they get higher. Similar to yesterday, many campers were able to challenge their comfort zones and address their personal goals by climbing a little higher and going on the giant swing.

After a snack, Choice programming began. The three options today were waterfront, sports and games in the field, and making sensory sticks. Campers down by the water had a wonderful time out on the paddle boards, canoes, and kayaks, or just free swimming in the shallows. Campers who participated in sensory sticks were able to make a test tube filled with glitter and water—a great distraction and source for de-escalation due to the relaxed and satisfying flow of the glitter. At the field, soccer and tether bal. l were the most popular games and several campers participated.

Before dinner, Kangaroo Court came to session. This fun camp tradition allows campers and counsellors to make accusations against staff, with the most accused going on trial and facing the possibility of being “slimed”. I was nominated for “being too awesome”. The overwhelming odds were against head counsellor Pebbles, who managed to escape being slimed last year. After a heated debate and several witnesses, Pebbles was found guilty for crimes against camp and had a bucket of glittery green slime poured over her head.

After dinner, the closing ceremony took place. A few campers sang songs, read poems, and did skits before counsellors gave them their awards for the week, as well as Polar Bear Awards (a small silver polar bear charm) for campers who dipped into the lake every morning. S’mores were enjoyed around the fire and then campers went back to the cabins for bedtime routine.

I hope the campers had as much fun this week as I did. Tomorrow, we’re packing up and getting back on the bus to head back to the city.

    Until next week,
    Pippin
