Salutations from beautiful Goldeye!
We had spectacular weather today and made sure to make the most of it. We started the morning with a Polar Bear Dip. This quick in-and-out into the lake takes place at 7:30am every morning and campers who complete all four days are given the Polar Bear Dip Award. It seemed like more than half the camp showed up this morning to show their resilience! Campers had time to take a warm rinse in the showers and then we met up for breakfast.
Campers participated in an activity called Zones of Regulation this morning. They met up in their counsellor groups after breakfast and identified themselves with one of four colours. These four colours each represent different emotions and moods, thus allowing campers to quickly identify themselves as green, blue, yellow, red, or a combination. This quick representation of emotion makes it easy for our campers to express their feelings, and is a routine that we participate in every morning.
The camp wide game this morning—for the first time this summer—was handball. After running to and fro, campers were given a snack and made a daily goal for themselves. This encourages them to strive towards something on a daily basis and can be anything from “go in the lake” to “make a new friend” or “try every activity”.
Team Building was today’s Social Skill. The two groups split up and participated in a variety of games and activities that encourage teamwork. Afterwards campers had some free time before joining at the hall for lunch. For the early part of the afternoon, campers did Skills Training. The skills today were archery and fire building. The two groups of campers were able to rotate between the two, thus allowing them an hour of each so they had plenty of time to develop each skill. After snack, Choice programming began. Campers were able to choose two of three activities, which included tie-dyeing shirts, playing dodgeball, and canoeing.
Campers had another section of free time before supper, and then we had a rousing game of Hydro Pyro. Though capture the flag was originally scheduled, Hydro Pyro took its place tonight to ensure we had good weather. The game involves two sides of a playing field and two teams, with a fire place at the far end of each side. Players must infiltrate the enemy side and make it into the end zone, rewarding them with a small cup of water to dump on the enemy’s fire. The first team to completely douse the other team’s fire wins.
Once the game had come to an end, campers headed to the cabins for bedtime routine. Tomorrow we have Goldeye programming, the Blowing Off Steam Social Skill, Choice programming, and more.
Stay tuned,
Pippin
